TL;DR

As CARagent introduced new capabilities, Sales Agents increasingly relied on training sessions and word-of-mouth to discover them. The original brief was to design a first-time onboarding carousel, but I recognised that a one-time experience wouldn't solve long-term feature discoverability.

I designed a scalable feature discovery system consisting of three touchpoints: a first-launch onboarding carousel, contextual in-app guidance, and a persistent Tips entry point that lets users revisit walkthroughs anytime. Together, they created a reusable framework for introducing both current and future features.

CONTEXT

CARagent is CARSOME's internal mobile application used daily by Sales Agents.

It supports Sales Agents throughout the vehicle selling journey: from checking car prices and booking inspections to reviewing offers, tracking commissions, and monitoring live bids.

As the product evolved, new capabilities were released regularly. However, feature awareness depended heavily on training sessions and colleagues rather than the product itself.

The challenge was to help users continuously discover new functionality.

MY ROLE

As the Product Designer, I owned the end-to-end experience for feature discovery in CARagent. Beyond designing the onboarding flow, I reframed the problem from a one-time onboarding experience to a scalable guidance system, exploring different entry points, interaction patterns, and visual directions with Product before working closely with Engineering through implementation.

INSIGHTS

Rather than relying on a single onboarding flow, I introduced three complementary layers of guidance.

01.

First-launch onboarding

A lightweight onboarding carousel introduces CARagent's five core capabilities before login, helping users quickly understand the product without delaying access.

02.

Contextual guidance

After login, users receive contextual guidance attached directly to relevant interface elements, reinforcing learning at the moment features become useful.

03.

Persistent Tips

To support ongoing learning, I introduced a Tips entry point on the homepage where users can replay the guided walkthrough whenever they need a refresher.

This transforms onboarding from a one-time experience into an always-accessible learning resource while giving users full control over when they need guidance.

KEY PRODUCT DECISONS

1. First-launch onboarding

The onboarding carousel appears before login, introducing the five core capabilities of CARagent. Instead of overwhelming users with detailed instructions, the carousel helps users understand what the app enables before they begin using it.

Because Sales Agents often need immediate access, the experience remains lightweight and easy to progress through.

2. Contextual guidance

Once users enter the application, contextual tooltips are anchored directly to relevant interface elements, allowing users to associate each explanation with the task they're about to perform. Learning happens within the product instead of before it. This creates a much stronger connection between explanation and action.

3. Persistent Tips entry point

Instead of forcing onboarding to repeat automatically, users can replay the guided walkthrough whenever they want a refresher. Placing Tips on the homepage makes guidance highly visible without interrupting primary workflows. The same framework can easily be extended without redesigning onboarding from scratch as new capabilities are introduced.

Design Explorations

Early concepts explored abstract illustrations before transitioning to actual product screens. Using realistic UI helped users immediately recognise where each capability lives inside CARagent, creating a smoother transition into the product.

I also explored presenting onboarding after login. After discussions with Product, we moved it before login to establish the product's value before users entered their workspace.

REFLECTION

This project reinforced that onboarding is about helping users continuously discover value. By shifting the focus from introducing the product once to supporting continuous feature discovery, we created a solution that scales alongside CARagent as new functionality is introduced.

Looking back, I'd prioritise instrumentation to measure walkthrough completion, replay behaviour, and feature adoption, allowing the team to optimise the experience using behavioural data.
